very story has a beginning and this one is no different. And in good story telling tradition, that is where it will begin. For the sake of brevity, however, many of the insignificant details will be left out so the essence of how the Military Network was perceived and came to be will be known. It began with a quirk of fate and a chance meeting by a couple of guys with very different backgrounds and talents but a common interest. And, as luck would have it, where the talents
of one excels, the other is lacking, and vice versa!
In mid 1996, this chance meeting occurred in a bookstore in Houston, Texas, a bookstore with a very large section of computer books. One of the perps of this soon-to-be-reality mission was searching for information on Java and cgi scripting and was totally lost on what he had found. He sensed a person standing next to him and excused himself for blocking the way. The other gentleman opened a conversation by asking something or other about HTML and, suddenly, he had the attention of the first. And so on, ad infinitum. Nothing very exciting, right? Even though neither realized it at the time, this chance meeting had opened the doors to a friendship, and eventual partnership, that fostered the Military Network.
The Military Network is the result a former member of both the Army of the United States and the United States Naval Reserve. After becoming exposed to the Internet and the incredible amount of information available, the singular thought of the realization that many active and former members of the Armed Forces could receive many benefits from what was available to them on the Internet. But understanding the difficulty in locating explicit bits and pieces of information on the 'net and chose that as the focus of their efforts in creating and producing the Military Network.
Dale R Smith, former member of both the Army of the United States and the United States Naval Reserve, is a publication specialist and graphic artist with over three decades of involvement in magazine, newspaper, film production, videography and multimedia. He has operated his own design studio, electric art studio, in the Houston area for several years. When he discovered the Internet a couple of years ago, Dale found a perfect medium in which he could utilize all his talents and experience. A self taught computer groupie, he has found yet another medium to exploit with his abilities to perceive, conceive and produce information for the Internet.
The collaboration of these two friends has resulted in the Military Network. It is in its infancy at this point but the response from all quarters has been encouraging. The official launch of the Military Network was realized at 0800 01 Nov 96.
